12:51 [by The Strokes]
From the album:

Lyrics:

Talk to me now I'm older
Your friend told you 'cause I told her
Friday nights have been lonely
Change your plans and then phone me

We could go and get 40's
Fuck goin' to that party
Oh really, your folks are away now?
Alright, lets go, you convinced me

12:51 is the time my voice
Found the words I sought
Is it this stage I want?

The world is shutting out, for us
We were tense for sure
But we was confident

Kiss me now that I'm older
I wont try to control you
Friday nights have been lonely
Take it slow but don't warn me

We would go and get 40's
Then we'd go to some party
Oh really your folks are away now?
Alright I'm coming

I'll be right there

Why this song?

The simple answer to that question, is the tune! It's great! It's so catchy that it grabs my attention everytime I hear it on the radio. The lyrics are also good, but without a little research, I never knew what was being sung. Still, the song called out to me without my ever knowing the lyrics, which tells me that this song is a cut above the rest. This to me, earns it a place on the page.

Bullet with Butterfly Wings [by The Smashing Pumpkins]
From the album:

Lyrics:

The world is a vampire
Sent to drain
Secret destroyers
Hold you up to the flames
And what do I get
For my pain
Betrayed desires
And a piece of the game

Even though I know
I suppose I'll show
All my cool and cold
Like old job

Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
Then someone will say what is lost can never be saved
Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage

Now I'm naked
Nothing but an animal
But can you fake it
For just one more show
And what do you want
I want to change
And what have you got
When you feel the same

Even though I know
I suppose I'll show
All my cool and cold
Like old job

Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
Then someone will say what is lost can never be saved
Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage

Tell me I'm the only one
Tell me there's no other one
Jesus was an only son
Tell me I'm the chosen one
Jesus was an only son for you

Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
Then someone will say what is lost can never be saved
Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage

Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a
Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a
Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage

Tell me I'm the only one
Tell me there's no other one
Jesus was an only son for you

And I still believe that I cannot be saved
And I still believe that I cannot be saved
And I still believe that I cannot be saved
And I still believe that I cannot be saved

Why this song?

I've had this song pop in and out of my head and hadn't heard it for a while, so I figured it would be a good idea to bring it back from the dead, so to speak, and relive the goodness that it is. Finally I'm able to hear a song by The Pumpkins with the original fire that Billy Corgan once possessed (I won't even mention Zwan). Great lyrics, great beat, highly infectious, but also highly satisfying.

Turning Japanese [by No Use For a Name]
From the album:

Lyrics:

I got your picture of me and you
You wrote "I love you" I wrote "Me too"
I sit there staring and there's nothing else to do
Oh it's in color
Your hair is brown
Your eyes are hazel
And soft as clouds
I often kiss you when there's nothing else around

I've got your picture, I've got your picture
I'd like a million of you over myself
I wanna doctor to take your picture
So I can look at you from inside as well
You've got me turning up and turning down
and turning in and turning 'round

I'm turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

I've got your picture, I've got your picture
I'd like a million of you over myself
I wanna doctor to take your picture
So I can look at you from inside as well
You've got me turning up and turning down
and turning in and turning 'round

I'm turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

No sex, no drugs, no wine, no women
No fun, no sin, no you, no wonder it's dark
Everyone around me is a total stranger
Everyone avoids me like a psyched lone-ranger
Everyone

That's why I'm turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

I'm turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Turning Japanese
I think I'm turning Japanese
I really think so

Why this song?

It's got a great beat. It's fun, fast... and a really great cover tune of a song I've heard since my childhood! Personally, I think the No Use For a Name version is much better than the original Vapours version. I hadn't even heard of the band before I bought the CD (Yes, I have a thing for cover tunes!), but despite my lack of knowledge, one thing still holds true to my daily life -- after listening to so much music, I've come to realize that a great song is great from the first time you hear it. This cover tune most certainly caught my attention (and need of the 'repeat' button!) from my first hearing.

Bye Bye Boyfriend [by Fefe Dobson]
From the album:

Lyrics:

I've been lying
To keep you from this pain
Now you're crying
And to know that I'm to blame
And I'll miss you
But it's over now

I'm so sorry
That it had to be this way
Please don't hate me
But there's nothing you can say
To change my mind
I've got to go away

The guy that I fell for
He wanted more and more

Bye bye boyfriend
It's time that I'd be o-n my way
Bye bye boyfriend
I used to like the way you said

Baby back it up
Lay down and work
It was fun but it couldn't last forever
Bye bye pretty boy,
(bye bye) It's time to pack it up
Oh, baby 'cause its over now

Let me tell you how it was
When we started off
The tattoo and the leap years
And the rightest sound
You used to rock

Now baby everything you do and say
Is messed up
Things have changed
Down is up
We're outta luck

And baby I'm sorry
That it had to be this way
Please don't hate me
But there's nothing you can say
To change my mind
I've got to go away

The guy that I fell for
He wanted more and more

Bye bye boyfriend
It's time that I'd be o-n my way
Bye bye boyfriend
I used to like the way you said

Baby back it up
Lay down and work
It was fun but it couldn't last forever
Bye bye pretty boy,
(bye bye) It's time to pack it up
Oh baby 'cause its over now

You never put the effort in
To the things that really count
A word here, and a kiss there
Could changed the way it's turning out

You work so hard at all the things
I never cared about
How hands work
And fingers moving
Eyes wide shut

And baby I'm lonely
Though your right in front of me
You controlled me
That was the girl I used to be
I'm not myself
Well it's over now

The guy that I fell for
He wanted more and more

Bye bye boyfriend
It's time that I'd be o-n my way
Bye bye boyfriend
I used to like the way you said

Baby back it up
Lay down and work
It was fun but it couldn't last forever
Bye bye pretty boy
(bye bye) It's time to pack it up
Oh, baby 'cause its over now

I'm boy-free,
Baby cause it's over now

Pretty pretty pretty pretty boyfriend,
C'mon
c'mon
c'mon
c'mon

Baby back it up
Lay down and work
It was fun but it couldn't last forever
Bye bye pretty boy
(bye bye boy) It's time to pack it up
Oh, baby 'cause it's over now

Why this song?

I heard it on the radio, and knew from that moment that I absolutely loved it! What a treat. It has a very catchy tune, great lyrics and the singer, Fefe Dobson, is great. I'd never heard of her before this song, but I'm seriously hoping to hear somemore of her soon. Play it loud, sing it loud... it's worth the time, the effort, and the parents complaining about the noise!

Give Up the Grudge [by Gob]
From the album:

Lyrics:

Give up the grudge
Give up the grudge

Don't make me listen to the stupid broken record again
The needle skippin' and repeatin' never reaching the end
You know your bitchin' and complainin' like you got it so tough
We're sick of all your cryin' will you ever shut up?

So keep bleeding your fake blood
Till no one even see's it
If that's the best you can make up
At least act like you mean it

Give up the grudge
Shut your fuckin' mouth
Why you gotta judge
Everbody but yourself
Take a look around you
There ain't nobody home
I may be a loser
But at least I'm not alone

Your Mercedes won't start
Yeah that's a cryin' shame
I guess 90k a year buys
Nothing but complaints
The people in my neighborhood
Think that I'm a threat
While the boss gets richer
They get deeper in debt

So keep bleeding your fake blood
Till no one even see's it
If that's the best you can make up
At least act like you mean it

Give up the grudge
Shut your fuckin' mouth
Why you gotta judge
Everbody but yourself
Take a look around you
There ain't nobody home
I may be a loser
But at least I'm not alone

Give up the grudge
Shut your fuckin' mouth
Why you gotta judge
Everbody but yourself
Take a look around you
There ain't nobody home
I may be a loser
But at least I'm not alone

Give up the grudge
Shut your fuckin' mouth
Why you gotta judge
Everbody but yourself
(at least I'm not alone)
Take a look around you
There ain't nobody home
I may be a loser
But at least I'm not alone
(at least I'm not alone)

Give up the grudge
Shut your fuckin' mouth
Why you gotta judge
Everbody but yourself
Take a look around you
There ain't nobody home
I may be a loser
But at least I'm not alone

Give up the grudge
Shut your fuckin' mouth
Why you gotta judge
Everbody but yourself
(at least I'm not alone)
Take a look around you
There ain't nobody home
I may be a loser
But at least I'm not alone
(at least I'm not alone)

Give up the grudge
Shut your fuckin' mouth
Why you gotta judge
Everbody but yourself
(at least I'm not alone)
Take a look around you
There ain't nobody home
I may be a loser
But at least I'm not alone
(at least I'm not alone)

Why this song?

It's fun and it's fast and I'm sick and tired of people judging me. At least that's how I'm feeling today. I'm having one of those days, okay? The lyrics are so true, and I am able to relate to them easily. This is a just a great song to let go of everything and sing to.

I Hate Everything About You [by Three Days Grace]
From the album:

Lyrics:

Everytime we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven't missed you yet
Every room-mate kept awake
By every silent scream we make
All the feelings that I get
But I still don't miss you yet

Only when I stop to think about it

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you

Everytime we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven't missed you yet

Only when I stop to think about it

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you
I hate everything about you
Why do I love you

Only when I stop to think about you
I know
Only when you stop to think about me
Do you know

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you
You hate everything about me
Why do you love me

I hate
You hate
I hate
You love me

I hate everything about you
Why do I love you

Why this song?

This song has a great beat and guitar backing. I absolutely love the music behind the vocals and when I close my eyes, I'm able to get lost in the sweet sounds filling my ears. Plus the lyrics, I've been there. We all have, I'm sure. Sometimes I still feel I am. Just one of those songs that stick with you when you first hear it and is a pleasure to listen to turned up loud through a set of headphones.

Dream On [by Depeche Mode]
From the album:

Lyrics:

Can you feel a little love

As your bony fingers close around me
Long and spindly
Death becomes me
Heaven can you see what I see

Hey you pale and sickly child
You're death and living reconciled
Been walking home a crooked mile

Paying debt to karma
You party for a living
What you take won't kill you
But careful what you're giving

There's no time for hesitating
Pain is ready, pain is waiting
Primed to do it's educating

Unwanted, uninvited kin
It creeps beneath your crawling skin
It lives without it lives within you

Feel the fever coming
You're shaking and twitching
You can scratch all over
But that won't stop you itching

Can you feel a little love
Can you feel a little love

Dream on dream on

Blame it on your karmic curse
Oh shame upon the universe
It knows its lines
It's well rehearsed

It sucked you in, it dragged you down
To where there is no hallowed ground
Where holiness is never found

Paying debt to karma
You party for a living
What you take won't kill you
But careful what you're giving

Can you feel a little love
Can you feel a little love

Dream on dream on

Can you feel a little love
Can you feel a little love

Dream on dream on
Dream on dream on
Dream on dream on

Why this song?

It's just such a fun song, one that I've newly discovered in fact. The guitar in the song is outstanding, combined with a tune that is filled with rhythmic perfection. This song is just one of the great ones I find myself listening to over and over. Even after several repeats, I find myself with that giddy sort of feeling of discovering something new to myself. Don't let the fact that the band is Depeche Mode turn you off. This song is nothing like their typical music.

Pop Song For Us Rejects [by Silverchair]
From the album:

Lyrics:

Addiction's held you back
But you don't care
'Cause you're on a high again
And it's not fair
Consuming alcohol
While I gotta drive
Take a hit from the drugs you stole
And try to survive

Since your life was over
You haven't yet been sober
You, you have held me back so long
Everything you do is wrong

Now I gotta dump you
Continue my life too
I tried to help you
Don't care what you do

Your state of mind's improved
But we're still apart
I visited you'd moved
Don't know where to start
Your life's and open cold sore
Got to get out of the cream
Now I'm thinking positive
But I know it's a dream

Since your life was over
You haven't yet been sober
You, you have held me back so long
Everything you do is wrong

Now I gotta dump you
Continue my life too
I tried to help you
Don't care what you do

You died yesterday
You died yesterday
You died yesterday
You died yesterday

Why this song?

Why not? Silverchair is one of the greatest bands. This song just proves it. Great lyrics, amazing voice -- which becomes all the more great when you know that Silverchair isn't one of those groups who have the sound altered to make it all the perfect pitch. Great to sing to, in the shower or otherwise!

6 Underground [by Sneaker Pimps]
From the album:

Lyrics:

Take me down
6 underground
The ground beneath your feet
Laid out low
Nothing to go
Nowhere a way to meet
I've got a head full of drought
Down here, so far off
Losing out, round here

Overground, watch this space
I'm open to falling from grace

Calm me down
Bring it round
Too way high off your street
I can see like nothing else
In me you're better than I wanna be

Don't think 'cause I understand I care
Don't think 'cause I'm talking we're friends

Overground, watch this space
I'm open to falling from grace

Don't think 'cause I understand I care
Don't think 'cause I'm talking we're friends

Overground, watch this space
I'm open to falling from grace

Talk me down, safe and sound,
Too strung up to sleep
Wear me out
Scream and shout
Swear my time's never cheap
I fake my life like I've lived;
Too much
I take whatever you're given;
Not enough

Overground, watch this space
I'm open to falling from grace

Why this song?

Just because it was the best song that I heard today. It makes for great 'mood' music, you know, the kind that puts you into that great place far, far away from anything that is bothering you here on our little planet known as the Earth. Just a little relief from the everyday saga that is my life. I needed a good song like this today!

Seven Nation Army [by The White Stripes]
From the album:

Lyrics:

I'm gonna fight 'em off
A seven nation army couldn't hold me back
They're gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back
And I'm talkin' to myself at night
Because I can't forget
Back and forth through my mind
Behind a cigarette

And the message comin' from my eyes says leave it alone...

Don't wanna hear about it
Every single one's got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it
From the Queen of England to the hounds of hell
And if I catch it comin' back my way
I'm gonna serve it to you
And that ain't what you want to hear
But that's what I'll do

And the feeling coming from my bones says find a home...

I'm going to Wichita
Far from this opera forevermore
I'm gonna work the straw
Make the sweat drip out of every pore
And I'm bleeding, and I'm bleeding, and I'm bleeding
Right before the lord
All the words are gonna bleed from me
And I will think no more

And the stains comin' from my blood tell me "Go back home"...

Why this song?

It's such a simple song, but the sound of the guitar and the drums combine for an amazing sounding song. I can honestly say it took me a few listens to actually like the song, but after that, it was like a light flicking on -- bang -- I loved it. So, if you've only heard it once, and leave the room whenever you hear it again because you dislike it, give it a few more listens, you just might end up loving it. I did!
